Medici Humanistic Academy

Know. Understand. Design. Serve. Training for the Missions, Districts and Villages of the Continuing Renaissance.

Established under the high patronage of H.R.H. Grand Duke Ottaviano de’ Medici of Tuscany

Identity and purpose

Mission of the Academy

The Medici Humanistic Academy is the educational institution of the Continuing Renaissance. Its purpose is not to create a school detached from life, but to help people who already possess substantial professional, entrepreneurial, cultural and civic experience connect their knowledge with a community, a territory and a responsibility.

The Continuing Renaissance is founded on the conviction that knowledge reaches its highest meaning when it becomes the capacity for judgement, judgement becomes responsibility, and responsibility produces works that are useful, good, beautiful and enduring.

For this reason, the Academy accompanies the Medici Diplomatic Missions, the Humanistic Districts and the Medici Humanistic Villages through pathways that differ in duration and depth.

Belonging and service

A dignity to be lived, not merely received

Receiving a proposal to enter the Florentine Community as a Noble of Florence and Medici Honorary Consul does not simply mean adding a dignity to one’s personal journey.

It means being invited to enter a community of people called to know Tuscany, build relationships between countries and territories, foster cultural encounters, understand opportunities, support initiatives and, according to their possibilities, contribute to the construction of the Continuing Renaissance.

The Academy gives this belonging an additional dimension: the opportunity to understand the project from within and progressively acquire the tools needed to take part in it consciously.

Training is not consideration for a dignity or title and does not automatically determine any operational appointment. Consuls, Ambassadors and Vicars hold distinct functions governed by the applicable instruments and Regulations.

Differentiated pathways

Training designed for different responsibilities

Not everyone who participates in the Continuing Renaissance has the same task. The Academy therefore provides modular training proportionate to the functions performed.

Foreign Missions

Honorary Consuls, Ambassadors and Fellows: Mission identity, method, relationships, the Bulletin and understanding opportunities.

District Network

Vicars, Pro-Vicars, Priors, Vice-Priors, Auditors, Chancellors and Knights: territorial knowledge, referrals, local relationships and proper cooperation with Magistracies and Missions.

Civic Councils of the Villages

Humanistic Gonfaloniers, Chancellors and the five members of the Governing Council: civic responsibility, community project design and the relationship between Village and District.

Higher education

For those who wish to deepen the method and prepare for more complex responsibilities, the 180-hour Executive Master is available.

Training immediately available

Programmes currently available in practical form

Short courses make it possible to acquire a common language, method and set of criteria within a limited period. The first programmes cover the Manifesto, the Regulations, the Manual of the Applied Doctrine of the Continuing Renaissance, the related grids, opportunity assessment, the Bulletin, and the preparation and interpretation of Opportunity Sheets.

Executive Master — 180 hours

The International Executive Master in Civic Humanism, Territorial Leadership and Human-Centred Project Design is the Academy’s advanced training programme. It is designed for people already established in professional, entrepreneurial, cultural, academic or institutional life and builds on the competences they already possess.

Phase I — 96 hours

Methodological and operational training. It establishes a common language and the essential capabilities needed to understand the Mission, use the method and read the District. Successful completion constitutes one of the eligibility pathways provided for by the Regulations.

Phase II — 84 hours

Consolidation, territorial application and project work. It deepens observation, relationships, project design and development of the Ambassador’s District Action Plan.

Short courses do not replace the Master: they serve a different purpose and enable people with different responsibilities to become operational quickly.

After the Master

Higher and Continuing Humanistic Education

Theoretical and cultural education does not end with the Diploma. After the Master, the Academy may offer seminars, meetings, specialist modules, exchanges among Ambassadors, reviews of territorial Plans and conversations with masters and specialists.

Higher and Continuing Humanistic Education is modular and progressive: it does not constitute a second compulsory cycle of an additional 180 hours, but accompanies cultural, methodological and territorial development over time.

Territorial education

Discover the Humanistic Districts of Tuscany

No one can truly represent a territory they do not know. For this reason, the Academy progressively organises short courses, conferences, meetings and study visits devoted to the history, traditions, landscape, artistic heritage, productive activities, agriculture, gastronomy and craftsmanship of individual Districts.

Archives, museums, villas, villages, businesses, workshops, monasteries, rural landscapes and encounters with people who preserve knowledge and memory become places of learning.

Before designing a District, one must first learn to see it.

A specialist pathway already established

Environmental School of the Order of Saint Stephen P.M.

The Environmental School operates under the aegis and patronage of the Medici Environmental Corps of the Order of Saint Stephen P.M., formerly the Institute of the Order’s Carovana, and develops a progressive pathway of education in environmental knowledge, protection and active stewardship.

Level I — Stewardship of Creation

Ecological spirituality, nature observation, biodiversity monitoring and use of the iNaturalist platform.

Level II — Territorial Protection

Natura 2000 Network and civic monitoring.

Level III — Protection of Territorial Identity

Integrated ecology, landscape, community and territorial culture.

Level IV — Direction of Ecological Programmes

Leadership, project design and environmental governance.

Level V — Integral Stewardship of Creation

High-level environmental responsibility, representation and ecological diplomacy.

Programme status: the detailed educational programme is currently defined for Level I — Stewardship of Creation. Programmes for the subsequent levels will be progressively developed and published by the Academy.

Development horizon

Future areas of academic development

Alongside the programmes already available, the Academy has identified areas in which the development of the Districts and Villages may make new programmes necessary. They are not presented as courses already in operation: they will be developed when concrete needs, qualified teachers, operational projects and suitable partners exist.

Civic nobility, history and Medici tradition

Dynastic history and law, nobility as service, heraldry, ceremonial practice and the history of Fiefdoms and territorial institutions.

Energy, autonomy and resilience

Renewable Energy Communities, ESCOs, agrivoltaics, bio-agriculture, energy efficiency, historic buildings, landscape and resilience.

Art, culture and patronage

Contemporary art, workshops, commissioning, patronage and relationships among artists, businesses, collectors and communities.

Food, traditions and community well-being

Food culture, agri-food biodiversity, Mediterranean diet, local traditions and food education, while respecting legally reserved professional competences.

Humanistic enterprise and social cohesion

Civic economy, corporate responsibility, craftsmanship, sustainability, work organisation, cooperation and the economic life of the Villages.

Principle of realism

An Academy that grows with the Continuing Renaissance

The Academy does not intend to create educational programmes before there is a genuine need to use them. The development of the Districts and Villages will progressively reveal new knowledge needs.

When concrete projects, qualified interlocutors, competent teachers, suitable partners and adequate resources exist, the Academy will be able to develop new courses, laboratories and academic programmes.

Concluding formula

From knowledge to action

The historical Renaissance was not born from a single discipline. It arose from the encounter among people, knowledge, enterprises, arts, institutions, territories and the capacity to act.

For this reason, education does not end with an examination. It continues whenever a person understands a territory more deeply, asks a more intelligent question, recognises the limits of their own competence, meets the right specialist, transforms an opportunity into a project, safeguards a memory, or contributes to the creation of a work intended to endure.

Knowledge becomes Renaissance when it once again produces civilisation.
